Links Abbreviations:  Rolling Stone - RS, Trouser Press-TP, Punknet PN, Rough Guide-RG

Saccharine Trust - Pagan Icons - 1981 - A hardcore band, but the guitar sound reminds me a little of U2.  Pretty decent set of songs.  A Human Certainty is really good.

Saccharine Trust - A Christmas Cry Single - Pretty cool Christmas tune from them.  Lots about sin and damnation.

Saccharine Trust - Surviving You, Always - 1984 - They still continue the attack.  I don't really like this as much as the other one.  The lyrics also, have become extremely religions with songs like The Giver Takes and Lot's Seed.

Camille Saint-Saëns - Carnival of the Animals - Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic - 1982 - This is a pretty cool piece.  I remember that it was used really well in the movie Days of Heaven.  Lots of little sound poems about all the animals in the zoo.

The Saints - (I'm) Stranded - 1977 - I found this in a cut out bin, but it doesn't belong there.  This punk band from Australia totally rocks.  They even had a hit with the title song, which is my favorite on the album.  They even do a pretty rocking cover of the oldie, Kissing Cousins.

Salem 66 - Salem 66 EP - 1984 - A jangly sort of folk-rock thing.  The singing isn't always on key, but that actually seems to add to the effect here.  Sleep on Flowers and Seven Steps Down are quite nice.

Salem 66 - A Ripping Spin - 1985 - The material is a little better here and they sound a lot better.  This is pretty enjoyable stuff.  And they do a cover of Wire's Fragile which is all right by me.

Salem 66 - Frequency and Urgency - 1986 - They sound even better here and the songs are pretty good.  They still are not great singers, it is interesting to listen to.

Salt 'n' Pepa - Very Necessary - 1993 - A pretty fun rap album. Interesting stuff like Groove Me, Whatta Man, and Sexy Noises Turn Me On.

Sam the Sham & The Pharaohs - Li'l Red Riding Hood - 1965 - The guy of Wolly Booly fame.  Lots more silly songs from him like the title track, Deputy Dog, The Peace Loving Bull, and Mary is My Little Lamb.

Carl Sandburg - Reading His Poetry - 1962 - A nice collection of poetry read by the author.  You have his famous one, The Windy City and lots of really short ones.

The Sandpipers Mitch Miller & Orchestra - Smokey the Bear (Part 1 and 2) Single - You too can learn about fire safety.

Saqqara Dogs - World Crunch EP - 1986 - Here we have guitar, unusual percussion and cello.  An interesting mix, but nothing earthshaking on these four songs.

Savage Republic - Tragic Figures - 1982 - Savage Republic was one of the first bands in the industrial category.  This album is really noisy and really cool.  Real Men is a really great song.

Joey Scarbury - Greatest American Hero - 1981 - Yes, this is the theme from the tv show (plus a whole added album).  This was another joke birthday present.  I intend to listen to it someday.

Schascle - Haunted By Real Life - 1991 - Got it for a dollar.  Seemed interesting, but I haven't really listened to it yet.

Scientists - When Worlds Collide/Ghost Train Single - Really cool bit of swamp grunge from Australia.

Scientists - We Had Love/Clear Spot Single - Another really cool bit from them.  Like the Cramps but harsher.

Scientists - Weird Love - 1986 - More cool swampy grunge. This time, it's a whole album.  Pretty cool.

Scorpions - Blackout - 1982 - I think this is one of the three or so metal albums I have from the 80s.  I haven't heard it in years.  I guess it was ok in its time.

Scratch Acid - Just Keep Eating - 1986 - Noisy abrasive stuff that is really good.   The lyrics are pretty wacked out too.  Crazy Dan and Eyeball are pretty rocking.

Scratch Acid - Berserker EP - 1987 - This is such a good band name that really fits.  This has six more abrasive crunchy songs.  Mary Had a Little Drug Problem is probably my favorite here.

Screaming Trees - Invisible Lantern - 1988 - Screaming Trees are a pretty cool band who kind of got caught in the Seattle grunge category, but they were doing it before then.  This isn't one of their better albums.  I saw them live around this time in a tiny club.  They totally rocked through their set.  The highlight was the double time cover of Search and Destroy.

Screaming Trees - From the Sweet Oblivion Sessions 10" Flexi - 1992 - A song from Sweet Oblivion and an extra song not available any where else.

The Screaming Tribesmen - Date With a Vampyre EP - 1985 - A band from Australia.  This is a garage band sounding thing.  Kind of grungy.  The title song is really good.

The Screaming Tribesmen - Top of the Town EP - 1986 - A little less grungy but still pretty decent.  (I Want to) Mess With You is pretty good.

Scritti Politti - Wood Beez/Absolute 12" Single - 1985 -A arty kind of new wave dance band.  They had a hit with the Wood Beez(Pray Like Aretha Franklin).

Scritti Politti - Cupid & Psyche 85 - 1985 - You got the two songs from the single above, and a lot of songs that kind of sound like them like Hypnotize and Perfect Way.  It is alright.

Section 25 - From the Hip - A seriously great drone dance album.  From the Manchester/Factory Records/Joy Division/New Order kind of thing.  Inspiration and Looking From a Hilltop are really great songs.

The Seeds - Pushin' Too Hard/Try To Understand Single - 1966 -The classic song from this 60s band.  Pretty much the only song anybody ever heard from them.  The ultimate anti-commitment song.

Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band - Against the Wind - 1980 - Never been a Bob Seger fan.  I think this is my sister's.

Andrés Segovia - Compositions of Sor and Tarrega - Segovia is really awesome on the guitar and particularly on flamenco.  Here he takes on a couple of Spanish composers and it is pretty good stuff.

The Selecter - Too Much Pressure - 1980 - This is one of the best albums of ska there is.  All of it is great like On My Radio, Three Minute Hero, Too Much Pressure and so many more.

The Selecter - Celebrate the Bullet - 1981 - This one is nowhere as good as the first one.  Besides the title track, not much jumps out at you.

707 - 707 - 1980 - I think this is also my sister's.  I have no idea what is even on this.

Sex Gang Children - Ecstasy and Vendetta Over New York - 1984 - They are part of the gothic dark gloom music thing.  This is a live show that is pretty decent. TP

Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bullocks, Here's the Sex Pistols - 1977 - Not really the album that started it all, since it was the singles that later ended up on here that started it all. All the classic songs that every good punk hums like Anarchy in the U.K., God Save the Queen, and Pretty Vacant.  Listening to this now, it is kind of surprising that compared to someone like Ministry or White Zombie, this seems pretty tame.

Sex Pistols - Gun Control - Winterland 1/14/78 - 1978 - Mainly interesting because of the historical significance.  This was their last concert together at the end of their fiasco of a tour of the US.  It has all their big songs, but they weren't all that great live.

Sex Pistols - The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle - 1979 - The sort of soundtrack to the Sex Pistols' movie.  Quite an array of stuff from early rehearsals, to French accordion and disco versions of songs, to Sid Vicious solo stuff.  Pretty good stuff.

Sex Pistols - Some Product Carri On (sic) - 1979 - This is a tape of interviews, live radio shows, etc.  No music on here.  Kind of funny.  It even has the British TV show interview that got them thrown off one of their labels.

Sex Pistols - Better Live Than Dead - 1988 - Strangely enough, I bought a tape deck at a thrift store, and this was in it.  The sound quality is pretty bad and the Sex Pistols were never very good live.  The set is pretty interesting though.

Ravi Shankar - Recorded in London - Ravi is best known as India's master of the sitar.  Here he does two ragas and a dhun.  Not sure when this is from, but it looks like 60s or 70s.

Pete Shelley - Homosapien - 1981 - Post-Buzzcocks, Pete Shelley went on to more conventional new wave stuff.  Couple of really good songs like the title track.

Pete Shelley - XL1 - 1983 - Still pretty good.  This one includes Telephone Operator.

Bobby Sherman - Bobby Sherman - 1969(?) - Teen idol of the early 70s. I believe this is his first album. Has his first big hit Little Woman.

Shockabilly - Colosseum - 1984 - Featuring the guitar insane person Eugene Chadborne, this is some pretty crazy stuff.  Kind of country-folk-psychedelic with a lot of noise in between.  They also take on Homeward Bound and Eight Miles High on here.

Shockabilly - Vietnam - 1984 - More insanity.  Eugene also features his amplified rake (yes, a garden rake) and bathroom plunger here.  Besides their own songs, they also savage songs of the Beatles, John Lee Hooker, and John Fogerty.

Shocking Blue - Venus Single - 1970 - The classic trashy song from the 70s.  "I'm your Venus".  Also covered by many bands.

Shonen Knife - Rock Animals - 1993 - Shohen Knife are like Hello Kitty crossed with the Buzzcocks.  Cutsie Japanese pop crossed with punk guitar.  Lindsey regrets that I ever brought Catnip Dream into her life.  It is one of the most maddenly catchy songs of all time.  With lyrics like "Catnip is a kitty cat drug/One puff, two puffs, high in a dream".  How can you go wrong here.

Shonen Knife - The Birds & the B-Sides - 1996 - A bunch of entertaining b-sides.  Lots of covers like Heatwave and Top of the World.  You also have originals like Strawberry Cream Puff, I Wanna Eat Choco Bars and Fruit Loop Dreams.

Shonen Knife - Brand New Knife - 1997 - Lindsey just bought this for me.  A great gift.  They have gotten really good musically and the songs are as cute as ever.  This is the best one of the ones I have.  It even has a bunch of the songs repeated in Japanese.

Shostakovitch - Symphony No 5, Op 47 - Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic take a run at Shostakovitch.

Shriekback - Care - 1983 - Former member of XTC puts together this pretty cool funky dance band.  This album has some really good tracks like Lined Up and My Spine (Is the Bassline).

Shriekback - Nemesis/Suck/Mothloop/Feelers 12" Double Single - 1985 - Nemesis was a really great club hit.  The rest are some live versions of songs.

Shriekback - Oil and Gold - 1985 - This is the album Nemesis came off of.  Lots of other similar sort of songs.  All in all, it is pretty good.

Jean Sibelius - Leopold Stokowski Conducts Sibelius-Symphony No. 1/Swan of Tuonela - 1977 -

Simon and Garfunkel - At the Zoo/The 59th Street Bridge Song(Feeling Groovy) Single - 1967 - Pretty cool songs from them.  Really short though.  One is barely two minutes and the a-side is not even two minutes.

Simon and Garfunkel - Bookends -1968 - This is pretty good. Hazy Shade of Winter is great and Mrs. Robinson, At The Zoo, and America are also pretty good.

Simon and Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water -1970 - Lots of record guides consider this their greatest album. I think is is pretty good. It was their last before they broke up. The title song, Cecilla, The Boxer and El Condor Pasa are all pretty good.

Simon and Garfunkel - Greatest Hits - 1972 - All the classic stuff from this 60s duo.  My copy was in a free bin, so it is horribly water damaged, but the record plays ok.

Simple Minds - Sparkle in the Rain - 1984 - New wave with some arty pretenscions.  The songs here are good.  Waterfront and Up On the Catwalk are really good.

Frank Sinatra - Songs For Swinging Lovers - 1956 - Frank sings about lots of women who have done him wrong because they leave him because they don't understand that he needs to see other chicks sometimes.  This seems to be the best collection of Frank I have heard.

Frank Sinatra - My Way - Frank belts out some trademark tunes like My Way and Mrs. Robinson.

Frank Sinatra - The Reprise Collection - 1990 - 4 discs of Frank. Almost too much to take.  I think it took this much of him in one dose to see why people like him.

Siouxie and the Banshees - Scream - 1978 - The great debut album from them.  The U2ish metal wall of guitar sound makes a great backdrop for Siouxie's vocals.  Jigsaw Feeling and Metal Postcard are really great.  Hong Kong Garden was tacked on here by the American label, but it is still a great song.  There is also a wild version of Helter Skelter here.

Siouxie and the Banshees - Join Hands - 1979 - Not as much great stuff on their second album.  Playground Twist is good.  It also finally commits their version of The Lords Prayer to vinyl (which was previewed at the 1976 punk festival with Sid Vicious on drums and Marco from Adam and the Ants on guitar.)

Siouxie and the Banshees - juju - 1981 - I just found this for a dollar. I know that I like Spellbound off this (on the singles collection below), and Arabian Knights is ok. This seems like the beginning of the decline of Siouxie for a while.

Siouxie and the Banshees - Once Upon A Time/The Sngles - 1981 - A great best of collection.  All great songs from the first four albums.  So I also get Christine which is on a album I don't have.  It seems like every time I play this, I end up playing it a couple times before I can make myself put it away.

Siouxie and the Banshees - Hyaena- 1984 - Robert Smith of the Cure is playing guitar on this one.  A couple of songs are pretty good here like Dazzle and their version of the Beatles' Dear Prudence, but nothing here has the crunch of their past.

Siouxie and the Banshees - Tinderbox - 1986 - A little better than before, but not great.  Cities in Dust did pretty well for them and it was the best song here.  Not much else jumps out of this for me.

Sister Ray - Purgatory/Hillside Single - 1988 - Couple of tracks from this garage punk band.

The Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always - 1985 - A pretty cool slab of gothic new wave metal with really deep bass vocals.  Black Planet and and the title track usually get turned up loud when it is on.

The Sisters of Mercy - Floodland - 1987 - Another good bit of goth.  Lucretia was played in clubs quite a bit.

Sixteen Horsepower - Sackcloth 'n' Ashes - 1995 - I bought this because I recently found out that I went to high school with the singer of this band and saw his early bands, Pavilion Steps and Blood Flower, many times.  This is a pretty cool combination of Southern Baptist hell fire and damnation and blues with lots of unusual traditional instruments.  It took a while to realize how much they reminded me of Gun Club.  Pretty cool stuff.

Sixteen Horsepower - Low Estate - Their second album. I don't think it is quite as good as the first one, but I still like it quite a bit. For Heaven's Sake is really cool.

Skids - Scared to Dance - 1979 - Stuart Adamson (later of Big Country) pioneered his bagpipe guitar sound here.  This is some really good Scottish punk with The Saints Are Coming and Into the Valley leading the pack.

Skin - One Thousand Years/My Own Hands 12" Single - Taking a break from tearing music apart in the Swans, Michael Gira and Jarboe, use acoustic instruments and strings to make a couple of really pretty songs.  It is still frightening in the way the best Swans' were.

The World of Skin - Ten Songs for Another World - 1990 - Gira and company have changed the band name, but not the basic Skin sound. More of the acoustic Swans like stuff. Pretty good.

Skinny Puppy - Mind:  The Perpetual Intercourse -  1986 - A band from Canada that uses lots of tapes, synthesizers and lots of rhythm.  Kind of noisy and industrial. Pretty interesting.  TP

Slade - Sladest - 1973 - I found this at a thrift store a few months ago.  Did Quiet Riot take their entire act from them?  You have Mama Weer All Crazee Now and Cum On Feel the Noize (sic).  This is some really bad stuff.

Slovenly - Thinking of Empire - 1986 - I really want to like this.  The songs are really cool and the guitar textures are really great, but the singing ruins the whole thing for me.

Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream - 1993 - This is such a seriously great album.  It is really long and it has an amazing variety of great stuff.  From the nice pretty ones like Disarm and Today to the rockers.  Cherub Rock is a perfect song.  Everything about is great and every time I listen to it, the volume just keeps creeping up and up.

Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness- 1995 - This is a whole lot of music.  Double cd.  The Smashing Pumpkins seem to be one of the few bands that can release lots of stuff and have the vast majority of it be really good.  Lots of great stuff on here like 1979, Zero, and Bullet With Butterfly Wings.  Nice mix of quiet pretty and all out rocking.

Smashing Pumpkins - Adore - Very quiet album.  Kind of takes a while to grow on you and gets better each time you listen to it  I usually end up repeating For Martha a couple of times everytime I play this.

Smash Mouth - Walkin' On The Sun - 1997 - 4 song single with their big hit. The b-side Sorry About Your Penis is a pretty punky song.

Smedley's Van - Smedley's Van Meets Iguanidon! - 1988 - This is a local Denver band.  I can't tell if they really can't play their instruments or if that is just an act.  The songs themselves are really great and funny.  I guess some of this sounds like the Dead Milkmen.  Great songs like Love Boat, Psycho Santa, Leave My Daughter Alone, and a cover of Paranoid.

Smersh - The Part of the Animal That People Don't Eat - Kind of generic, medium paced drum machine, distorted vocals, etc. I guess it kind of reminds me of something like Head Of David.

Bessie Smith - The Complete Recordings - 2 cds of classic blues.  This is really good stuff.

Kendra Smith/David Roback/Keith Mitchell - Fell From the Sun EP - 1984 - Rain Parade guitar player (David) and Dream Syndicate bass player (Kendra) put together a really cool EP with soft spacey music that is really pretty and great.

Will Smith - Big Willie Style - We're getting jiggy wit it on this. The version of Just the Two Of Us does kind of annoy me, but the rest of this is pretty entertaining.

The Smithereens - Blow Up - 1991 - Kind of generic new wave pop. Top of the Pops is ok, but the rest of this is kind of boring.

The Smiths - The Smiths - 1984 - The backing band of Johnny Marr and the rest is so good and writes such good songs that it pretty much overcomes the pretensions of Morrissey.    There is a lot to like here like Reel Around the Fountain, Still Ill and Hand in Glove.

The Smiths - Hatful of Hollow - 1984 - An assortment of singles and radio sessions.  There is a good variety of stuff here from the dance groove of How Soon is Now? and the quiet acoustic version of Back to the Old House.

The Smiths - Stay Handsome - This is the audio from the video with a pretty decent live show, some interviews and the Sandy Shaw version of Hand in Glove.

The Smiths - Meat is Murder - 1985 - Morrissey gets too much free rein here and mars much of this album.  It is ok but the title track and the mooing cow are just too over the top.

The Smiths - The Queen is Dead - 1986 - This one is much better.  Johnny Marr is much more involved here and the backing tracks are really good.

The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs - 1987 - The Smiths put out a lot of singles and they are all jammed onto this double album.  This is a really good collection of their songs.

Jill Sobule - Jill Sobule - 1995 - She was from Denver. Kind of folk pop. She had a hit with I Kissed A Girl, included here. The rest of this is fairly pleasant.

Social Distortion - 1945/Under My Thumb/Playpen Single - 1982 - Social Distortion has been around a long time.  The sound they started out with is not all that different with the sound that finally got them a few hits.  This is their very first single and and it is really good.

Social Distortion - Mommy's Little Monster - 1983 - This is a really great album.  Lots of great guitar and that distinctive voice of Mike Ness.  Many classic tracks like Another State of Mind.

The Soft Boys - Wading Through A Ventilator EP - 1978 - Early stuff from 1977.  Very ecentric songs from this band.  Fast and punky but not in the way other groups in England were at the time.

The Soft Boys - Give It To The Softboys Single - 1979 - Contains a couple of live tracks from 1979 (the title track and Elvis' Heartbreak Hotel).  The other side has some studio outtakes from 1978.  Very early Soft Boys.

The Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight - 1980 - A classic album.  Robyn Hitchcock and Kimberly Rew (later in Katrina and the Waves) put together an insane album of pop tunes.  I Wanna Destroy You, Underwater Moonlight, and Insanely Jealous are great songs.

Sonic Youth - Sonic Youth EP - 1982 - Ah, Sonic Youth, probably my favorite band.  Their debut recording.  Lots of jangling, dissonant guitar noise here.  They still seem to be finding their way.  One track, I Dreamed I Dream is really great and is really awesome to listen to in the dark.

Sonic Youth - Confusion is Sex - 1983 - They have got something here.  The dissonant wall of guitar noise is pretty great here.  There is also the crudest cover ever of Iggy's I Wanna Be Your Dog.

Sonic Youth - Kill Yr. Idols - 1983 - Still getting better here.  The songs are starting to get really crushing.  The title track really rocks and Brother James is really scary.

Sonic Youth - Death Valley '69 / Brave Men Single - 1984 - Cool single

Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising - 1985 - Still better.  Death Valley '69 and I Love Her All the Time are great.

Sonic Youth - Death Valley '69 EP - 1985 - A collection of a few songs off the first few albums.

Sonic Youth - Flower/Halloween12" Single - 1986 - Two more good songs.  Looks like they were added to the Bad Moon Rising CD.

Sonic Youth - EVOL- 1986 - Sonic Youth kind of first took off for me on this one.  The songs are a little more conventional structurally, but the wall of noise has been refined into a awesome weapon.  There is some nice quiet pretty stuff like Shadow of a Doubt and there is rocking stuff like Expressway to Yr Skull and Tom Violence.

Sonic Youth - Live Denver July 12, 1986 - 1986 - I saw this show, it wasn't as good as the next time I saw them, but this was a pretty great show.  Lots of EVOL stuff and lots of fucked up guitars played with screwdrivers and lots of cool stuff like that.

Sonic Youth - Master-Dik 12" Single - 1987 - You got to let Sonic Youth screw around a little so that when it comes to the real albums, they have it out of their system.  You have the title song featuring J Mascas of Dinosaur Jr.  The b-side has Beat on the Brat and Ticket to Ride covers along with weird sounds and tape loops.  They also recorded a album under the name Ciccone Youth doing Madonna covers and other screwing around.

Sonic Youth - Sister - 1987 - Now this is good.  This has it all with the crushing White Cross and the great dissonance of Stereo Sanctuary.  Don't listen very closely to the lyrics, because they are really silly.  (I Got A) Catholic Block has probably my favorite song opening of all time.  The buzz of plugging in the guitar cord, the drums start and then they all rip into it.

Sonic Youth - Silver Rocket/You Pose You Lose/Non-Metal Dude Wearing Metal Tee Single - 1988 - Live versions of songs that would later end up on Daydream Nation.

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation - 1988 - A double album and on some days, my favorite album of theirs, otherwise it is Sister.  There is so much great stuff here like Teen Age Riot, Silver Rocket and Candle.

Sonic Youth - Touch Me I'm Sick 12" Single - 1989 - With Mudhoney on the b-side doing Halloween, they swapped songs.

Sonic Youth - Goo - 1990 - A bit disappointing.  Dirty Boots and Kool Thing are pretty good, but not much else gets my heart racing.

Sonic Youth - Dirty - 1992 - Still not as good.  100% and Sugar Kane are the best here.

Sonic Youth - Rarities - Pretty cool two cd set of all sorts of stuff. This is mostly covers of songs by Nirvana, New York Dolls, etc, and lots of the Fall.

Sons of T - The North Dakota Tapes - 1985 - This was a local Boulder band that was really great.  Kind of hard to describe, but really rocking, lots of rhythm.  They sang about God a lot, but this was no impediment to them.  Kind of a U2 type guitar.  The lead singer had a standup drum set and when both the drummers got going, it was pretty cool.

Soul Asylum - Grave Dancers' Union - 1992 - Their big breakthrough album and it has some pretty good stuff on it like Somebody to Shove and Black GoldRunaway Train is kind of pretty and nice.

The Specials - The Specials - 1979 - A classic album of ska.  Everything on here is excellent like Concrete Jungle, A Message To You Rudy, and my favorite Gangsters. "Don't call me Scarface."

The Specials - Peel Sessions EP - 1987- Radio versions of four of their really cool songs like Gangsters and Concrete Jungle.  Pretty good.  Recorded in 1979.

The Specials - More Specials - 1980 - A little less ska, but still pretty good.

The Specials - Ghost Town/Why?/Friday Night Saturday Morning 12" Single - 1981 - As a last hurrah, they released this really great song about riot torn London.

Brent Spiner - Ol' Yellow Eyes is Back - It's Data from Star Trek with his very own album of his favorite show tunes.  Musically it is pretty good.  He can actually sing, unlike much of his Star Trek brethren.

The Spinning Wighats - Encore From Hell/10/5/60 Flexi Single - Better known as Long Ryders.  A couple of live tracks.  Country Byrd's kind of folk rock.  Sid Griffin reads the bad reviews the band received to a musical accompaniment.  My favorite line was something like "They play music to overweight balding hippies.  That's you guys."

The Spinning Wighats - I Can't Hide Flexi Single - Another Long Ryders' song.  This one looks like a Flamin' Groovies cover from the song writing credit.

Rick Springfield - Working Class Dog - 1980 - From General Hospital to rock star.  You have Jesse's Girl here.

Bruce Springsteen - Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. - 1973 - His debut album. It has a whole lot of Dylan like stuff. There are a few things that are really good like Blinded By The Light and For You.

Bruce Springsteen - The Wild, the Innocent, and the E Street Shuffle - 1973 - His second album and it is pretty good. I really like Rosalita (Come Out Tonight).

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run - 1975 - His first big album and it has some pretty cool stuff on it.  Lots of songs about his car.

Bruce Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of Town - 1978 - A little more subdued album.  Some nice pretty stuff like Candy's Room and Badlands.

Bruce Springsteen - The River - 1980 - A bit overwhelming for a double album. I think 1/2 the songs are about cars. Could have probably been a better single album, but there is a bunch of good stuff on this.

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska - 1982 - This is by far the best Springsteen album.  Bruce, his acoustic guitar and a 4 track recorder in his living room.  Besides the standout Atlantic City, almost everything else is great, like Reason To Believe, State Trooper, Johnny 99, etc.  The only thing that seems comparably powerful in recent history has been the Dead Man Walking Soundtrack.

Bruce Springsteen - Born In The U.S.A. - 1984 - Not really my favorite album from him, but for a dollar, I couldn't turn it down. I have often thought that if they had just recorded the rehearsals for this instead of all the production they put in this, this would have been better.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band - Live/1975-85 - I just found this five record box set for $3. It is pretty impressive. Despite what he might put on albums, his live shows have always been legendary. One of the few people who can really play a stadium and make it work. And this has some early stuff when he was still playing clubs. I think I got a pretty good deal.

Bruce Springsteen - Human Touch - 1992 - The title song is ok, but not too much exciting going on here.

Bruce Springsteen - In Concert - MTV Plugged(live) - 1993 - This is part of the Unplugged series, but he plugged in for this one. Bruce has put out a lot of songs, so I guess they cut him a little slack.

Bruce Springsteen - Greatest Hits - 1995 - Pretty good compilation of his career. I like the early stuff a lot better, but it is all pretty good.

Bruce Springsteen - The Ghost of Tom Joad - 1995 - I kind of hoped this would be Nebraska Part 2, but it isn't quite that good. Lots of quiet acoustic songs.

Squeeze - (U.K.) Squeeze - 1978 - Kind of inconsistent debut from this new wave pop band.  Take Me I'm Yours is pretty good.

Billy Squire - Don't Say No - 1981 - I just found this for a dollar. It has his big hits In The Dark, The Stroke, and Lonely Is The Night. Kind of trashy, but in the right mood, it is kind of fun.

Squirrel Bait - Squirrel Bait EP - 1985 - This is such a great album.  It is like Husker Du, but louder and faster.  "I'm going to beat you up at the end of this" he says as they launch into Sun God and they don't stop crushing your skull until the end.

Squirrel Bait - Skag Heaven - 1987 - They launch this one with Kid Dynamite.  The rest isn't quite as good as the first ep, but then again how much really is.  Mostly pretty cool stuff.  Unfortunately, they broke up right as this one was released.

Squirrel Bait - Slake Train Coming/Kid Dynamite Single - 1986 - Some tracks from Skag Heaven.  A nice blast of Hüsker Dúish power pop.

The Standells - The Best of the Standells - The Standells were a 60s garage band.  They had a hit with Dirty Water.  There is a lot of other cool stuff on here like Sometimes Good Guys Don't Wear White and Little Sally Tease.

Ringo Starr - Blast From Your Past - 1975 - Ringo's greatest hits like You're Sixteen, The No No Song, etc. He only had a few good solo songs, but he is still my favorite Beatle.

Ringo Starr - Ringo's Rotogravure - 1976 - Nothing special on this one.

The Status Quo - Pictures of Matchstick Men Single - 1967 - Their one big hit from the 60s.

Steel Pole Bath Tub - Steel Pole Bath Tub - 1986 - This is the first thing I heard from them when they were living in Boulder.  They used to play shows with Warlock Pinchers all the time.  There was one show where they ripped open packets of Kool-aid and threw them at the audience.  I tasted it for days.  This one is before they got deep into the metal sound.  The basslines were always really busy and wild.  The guitar is kind of jangly here.  There is also a lot of banging on stuff like chains and trash cans.  Bale O' Hay and Season of Reason are my favorite here.

Steel Pole Bath Tub - We Own Drrrills - 1987 - This one is kind of the pinnacle for me.  Lots of samples of cool stuff.  Kung Fu Love is filled with fight sequences from kung fu movies.  They also had tapes of weird noises that they had on a foot petal that they would throw in at times.  Rain Song is like a really cool Husker Du type song.  Lots of sounds like shaking big sheets of plastic thrown in for good measure.

Steel Pole Bath Tub - Butterfly Love - 1989 - A pretty cool thing where they get a lot noisier and harsher than before.  Lots of songs about busted up relationships.

Steel Pole Bath Tub - Lurch - 1990 - An experimental metal grunge thing with mixed results.

Steel Pole Bath Tub - Tulip - 1991 - Much better bit of noise and feedback.  The distortion and strange noises leak out of Mercurochrome.

Steel Pole Bath Tub - Bozeman EP - 1992 - Short three song EP with more noise and distortion.

Steel Pole Bath Tub - Scars From Falling Down - 1995 - Wow, they finally hit a major label.  They still rock pretty hard.  The 500 Club is my favorite.

The Stems - No Heart/Lon Chaney Junior's Daughter Flexi Single - 1984 - A little bit of the 60s psychedelia revival.

Wallace Stevens - Wallace Stevens Reading His Poems - 1956 - A nice collection of his poems read by the poet.

Stiff Little Fingers - Inflammable Material - 1979 - Their debut and a whole bunch of classic stuff.  This is my favorite part of their career.

Stiff Little Fingers - All the Best - 1983 - A double album compilation of all their singles from the career of the Belfast punk band shows their evolution from punk to power pop and their experimentation with reggae.  I really love the early punk stuff like Suspect Device and Alternative Ulster, but they lose me towards the beginning of the second record after they stop playing punk.

Sting - The Best of Sting 1984-1994 Fields of Gold - 1994 - This is Lindsey's.  I like the Police, but sometimes, Sting by himself gets to be too much.

Karlheinz Stockhausen - Gesang der Junglinge / Kontakte - From 1955 through 1959.  Early electronic music, when you really had to work to make electronic music and tape loops, etc.

Karlheinz Stockhausen - Sternklang- 1971 - Stockhausen was industrial before Throbbing Gristle ever picked up intruments.

Karlheinz Stockhausen - Mantra - 1971 -

Stone Temple Pilots - Tiny Music - 1996 - This has some pretty good songs like Lady Picture Show, Big Bang Baby, etc.

Stone Temple Pilots - 12 Gratious Melodies - A collection of some of their best songs.

The Stooges - The Stooges - 1969 - The classic first album from Iggy Pop.  The classic songs here 1969, I Wanna Be Your Dog, and No Fun.

The Stooges - No Fun - 1980 - This is a Canadian compilation of the first two Stooges albums.  This adds some good stuff like Loose, T.V. Eye and 1970.

Iggy and the Stooges - Raw Power - 1973 - This is a awesome album.  This one really laid a blueprint for punk.  Search and Destroy rocks as hard as anything that came out of punk.

Iggy and the Stooges - Metallic K.O. - 1975 - This is a really funny live show from Iggy and the Stooges.  It is from the last Stooges show ever.  Most of this is spent insulting and baiting the audience who obviously really hates the show.  The songs sound pretty drunken and sloppy.

Iggy and the Stooges - I'm Sick of You/Tight Pants/The Scene of the Crime 12" Single - 1977 - More rough stuff like the Kill City album.

The Stooges - Jesus Loves the Stooges Single - 1977 - Kind of a Christmas single.  A couple of songs from Kill City and a live jam.

Strauss - Strauss' Greatest Hits - This has his big hit, the Zarathustra Fanfare (or as it is better known, the theme from 2001.)

Igor Stravinsky - The Firebird/Peturshka - 1971 - Two symphonic pieces from the Russian composer.

Igor Stravinsky - Le Sacre Du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) - 1977 - Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra.  This one was really a revelation to me.  Wow, classical music could be really abrasive.  I often think that if Stravinsky was alive today, he would be in a band like Sonic Youth.  Any music piece that causes a riot at the first performance has to be great.

The Stranglers - IV - 1980 - A compilation of some of their earlier albums and singles.  The only thing I remember about this is the track Meninblack which is an instrumental waltz.

The Stranglers - The Collection 1977-82 - 1982 - Pretty much everything you would need from them like (Get a) Grip, Peaches, Waltz in Black, etc.  I don't get real excited by them, but this is ok.

Barbra Streisand - My Name is Barbra, Two...- Lindsey's.

The Style Council - Introducing The Style Council EP - 1983 - After the breakup of the Jam, Paul Weller went on to form the Style Council.  They are kind of cocktail jazz and soul.  Long Hot Summer was a club hit.  Headstart For Happiness and The Paris Match are also quite nice.

The Style Council - My Ever Changing Moods - 1984 - The styles are all over the place on this, cocktail jazz, funk, rap, etc. I have always liked The Paris Match, which is sung by Tracey Thorn on this one.

Styx - Cornerstone- 1979 - Another joke birthday gift.  I am not really sure what is on this one.  I will have to listen to this eventually.

Suburbs - Credit in Heaven - 1981 - This is a double album of pretty good funk-new wave-punk.  Nothing huge jumps out here.  It is good but not as good as their next one.

Suburbs - Love is the Law - 1983 - This is a pretty fun album. Kind of funk.  They were fun to see live.  The title track and Rattle My Bones are pretty cool.

Nikki Sudden & Dave Kudsworth: Jacobites - The Rugged School - 1986 - This is a compilation of a few of their English albums.  This is a really nice album of acoustic sounding songs with a touch of 60ism.

Suicide - Suicide - 1977 - This is one frightening album.  Kind of like Soft Cell, but way harsher.  Pulsing synthesizer and lots of screams.  Frankie Teardrop is a epic song of a down and out laborer and his desperate last few hours.  They even do a hair raising cover of 96 Tears.

Suicide - 1/2 Alive - 1981 - Half live and half studio, this offers a lot more of their scary work.  They even do a cover/rewrite of the Stooges' Penetration.

Suicide Twins - Suicide Twins - I don't know a whole lot about this band.  The album is kind of acoustic with some string quartet stuff thrown in occasionally.  It is pretty good in spots.

Jimmy Swaggart - Greatest Hits - Sure, he messes around with hookers and makes outragous statements, but he also has a singing career to keep him busy. Here are a whole lot of gospel songs preserved on the hi-fidelity of 8-track.

Swans - Filth - 1983 - A description I heard of the Swans is it the sound of music being torn apart.  There is also the description that it sounds like The Velvet Underground's Sister Ray played at half speed.  This album isn't that special.  Lots of noise, screaming and crunch.

Swans - Cop - 1984 - Things are getting better, but they are not there yet.  Half Life has lots of noise and crunch and usually gets me turning it up.

Swans - I Crawled/Raping A Slave/Young God/This is Mine EP - 1985 - Even better.  They are getting better at writing and playing.

Swans - Greed - 1985 - Oh yeah, this is it.  They are still as noisy as ever, but they have started to leave open spaces in their sound.  One song, Money Is Flesh, is just a two note trumpet part played over and over with the crunching bass and drums to create a dance song.  There are some just piano and bass.  This one will crush your skull, especially fun in the dark.

Swans - Time Is Money (Bastard)/Sealed in Skin Single - Pretty cool single from the noisemeisters.

Swans - Holy Money - 1986 - A lot like Greed, with some remixes of those songs.  This one doesn't seem as focused as that one and loses some of the intensity for me.  Still pretty good.  I saw them live about this time.  It was really funny, at one point, a fight broke out in the audience and Michael Gira started saying "Kill each other, Kill each other, Kill each other, Why did you stop."

Swans - Public Castration is a Good Idea - 1986 - A double live album from about this time.  Some really good performances and some of their best work.  Pretty cool. This is extremely difficult to listen to in one sitting. I usually have to play one side a day.

Swans - Children of God - 1987 - Wow, this is a big change.  I guess they were moving in this direction anyways.  The sound as become a lot more acoustic, but they haven't lost much of the power and crunch.  I think Michael Gira has learned much from his side project Skin, which seems to be largely symphonic (or string quartetish).

Swans - The Burning World - 1989 - This one is a little disappointing.  This one has no where near the power of the other ones.  I saw them live again about this time.  It was pretty cool because even though they were playing mostly acoustic instruments, it was still pretty powerful live.

Swimming Pool Q's - The Deep End - 1981 - Kind of arty silly new wave stuff.  This one didn't leave much of an impression on me.

The Swingers - Counting the Beat - 1982 - This is a pretty pleasant album with lots of twangy poppy new wave from a former member of Split Enz.  The title song is really good.

Swinging Chariots - Inging Riots - 1986 - This is a band that I saw in Boulder a lot (they came from neighboring Lyons).  They are kind of conventional sounding rock with really weird chord progressions.  Their singer was really trippy.  The lyrics made no sense at all, but they sounded pretty cool.

Syndicate Of Sound - Little Girl/You Single - 1966 - The classic song from the 60s.  Very strange because even though it is a nasty biting song about how his girlfriend is cheating on him, the music is all happy and bubbly. "You didn't do nothing that hadn't been done before."

Syndicate of Sound - Keep It Up/Good Time Music Single - Two more songs from the 60s band.
