Rabid Dogs - 30 Minutes over Lawrence -January 24, 1987 - This is a live tape of a really bad band I was in during college. This was from our world tour (we played one show in Lawrence KS.). Did I mention we were really bad?

Rabbits Wedding - Rideout/Someone As Single - 1986 - A jangly couple of songs from Australia.

Radio Birdman - Radios Appear - 1977 -  They got their name from a Stooges song and it is no accident.  This is loud and fast stuff from these Australians.  Cool stuff.  There is a great cover of You're Gonna Miss Me.  My favorite is their Hawaii Five-Oish song Aloha Steve & Danno.

Radio Birdman - Living Eyes - 1981 - Still great rocking punk.  This one is not a letdown.

Radiohead - The Bends - 1995 - I really like this album.  It is kind of quiet and really powerful at the same time.  Fake Plastic Trees and Just are pretty cool songs.

Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine - 1993 - Loud, angry, just my speed.  Lots to like here like Killing in the Name Of and Freedom.

Rain Parade - Sad Eyes Kill Flexi Single - Part of the neo-psychedelic underground sound.  Pretty quiet nice song.

Rain Parade - Emergency Third Rail Power Trip - 1983 - This album is pleasant enough but doesn't leave a big impact.

Ramones - Ramones - 1976 - This is a classic album of punk.  The Ramones have been playing the same four chords for years, and the results are usually great.  This one gave the world Blitzkrieg Bop, Beat on the Brat, and Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue.

Ramones - Leave Home - 1977 - Same four chords, still great.  They buzzsaw their way through Gimme, Gimme, Shock Treatment, Sheena is a Punk Rocker and a cover of California Sun.

Ramones - Rocket To Russia - 1977 - Yep, still great.  You got Teenage Lobotomy, Cretin Hop and a cover of Do You Wanna Dance.  The Trashmen's classic trash song Surfin' Bird (also covered here) seems to be an obvious model for the band.

Ramones - Road to Ruin - 1978 - Completing the set of the classic first four albums.  Standouts, I Wanna Be Sedated and I Just Want To Have Something To Do.  The next album, which I don't have, apparently was not very good.

Ramones - Subterranean Jungle - 1983 - Doesn't live up to the first four.  It does have some pretty good stuff though.  Psycho Therapy is pretty cool.  Two pretty cool covers, Little Bit o' Soul and the Chambers Brothers' Time Has Come Today.

Ramones - Too Tough To Die - 1984 - A much better album than their previous few albums.  Seems to be harder and more metal than before.  I really like Mama's Boy and Wart Hog.

Ramones - Animal Boy - 1986 -  They are sounding closer to a normal rock band than ever before.  Some ok stuff here like Somebody Put Something In My Drink and Bonzo Goes to Bitburg.

Ramones - Halfway to Sanity - 1987 - This is more like the Ramones I know and love.  This rocks way more than they have in a long time.  Great stuff like Bop 'til You Drop, Weasel Face (this song reminds me of a college professor for an English class and we called him weasel face because his face would make all kinds of convoluted expressions all the time), and Go Lil' Camaro Go.

Ramones - Ramones Mania - 1988 - A really good collection (I think there are like 30 songs here).  Pretty much all the classic songs.

Lee Ranaldo - From Here > Infinity - 1987 - Guitar player from Sonic Youth.  This is experimental stuff (in the vein of Metal Machine Music).  Some of this is pretty cool.  There are also some pretty cool locked grooves.

Rank and File - Rank and File - 1982 - Former members of the punk group The Dils.  This is country punk that is really good.

Rational Youth - No More and No Less 12" Single - I think this one was free.  It isn't very good although I can't remember what I sounds like.

The Raunch Hands - Learn to Whap-a-dang - 1986 - 50/60s style rowdy rock.  Pretty fun without taking too much mental effort.

Maurice Ravel - Piano Concerto in G Major/Piano Concerto in D Major for the Left Hand - Samson Francois with the Paris Conservatorire Orchestra - Written for a piano player who lost an arm in WWI, I also remember that this was a plot in a M.A.S.H. episode where Charles helps out a piano player who lost an arm.

The Rave-Ups - These Wishes Single - A new wave pop song.

The Reactors - Cracked Marble/I Want You Single - It has been a while since I listened to this.  I will let you know what it sounds like when I do.

The Records - Crashes - 1980 - Kind of generic power pop new wave stuff.  Not real great.

Red Cross - Red Cross - 1980 - Their 5 song debut from this L.A. punk band.  It is really good.  Cool stuff like Cover Band, Standing in Front of Poseur, and my favorite, Annette's Got the Hits.

Redd Kross - A Peek into Show World - 1997 - This just came with a magazine I subscribe to.  It is a three song sampler from Redd Kross's new album.  (This is the same band as Red Cross.)

Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry - Cut Down - Pretty decent couple of songs.

Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry - Talk About the Weather - 1985 - They have a Joy Division/Sisters of Mercy sound.  It is fairly interesting listening.

Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry - Paint Your Wagon - 1986 - They got real deep into the Joy Division worship, that even as big of a Joy Division fan as I am, this is pretty disappointing.

Red Guitars - Slow to Fade - They released a amazing great single Good Technology, which unfortunately, isn't here.  English new wave with a slight influence from the 4AD sound.  Remote Control is quite good.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Red Hot Chili Peppers - 1984 - Their first album.  I like Real Men Don't Kill Coyotes, but generally this doesn't excite me too much.

Red Rockers - Good As Gold Single - 1983 - Single from the album.  Pretty good.

Red Rockers - Good As Gold - 1983 - Right in their transition from punk to new wave.  China and Good As Gold are fairly good songs.

Red Rockers - Blood From a Stone Single - 1984 - Former punk rockers caught up in the whole Alarm/R.E.M. thing.  An ok song.

Lou Reed - Transformer - 1972 - This is a great album by Lou.  It has his monster hit Walk on the Wild Side.  It also has some quieter stuff like Vicious, Satellite of Love and Perfect Day.

Lou Reed - Berlin - 1973 - Listen to this one in the dark.  It will scare you.  Really gloomy, quiet songs.  Pretty great stuff.

Lou Reed - Lou Reed Live - 1975 - An ok set of his songs.  Lots of really long solo breaks.

Lou Reed - Metal Machine Music - 1975 - I haven't decided if this is an amazing album or total bullshit.  A double album of feedback and tape noise.  It is kind of fun to listen to sometimes, but mainly, very difficult to listen to.  I have not only listened to this all the way through, but have done it a number of times.

 Lou Reed - Rock And Roll Diary 1967 - 1980 - 1980 - Kind of a strange mixture of songs.  A couple of great songs from the Velvet Underground, plus some good and bad stuff from his career.  Overall, just a little too much of the bad Lou Reed stuff.

Lou Reed - The Blue Mask - 1982 - This is ok, nothing to get too excited about.

Lou Reed - New Sensations - 1984 - This is a little better.  He had some success with I Love You Suzanne.

Lou Reed - Mistrial - 1986 - I don't know, Lou seems to be on autopilot for this one.  It has some ok stuff like No Money Down, Video Violence and The Original Wrapper (where he admits that he was the original rapper because he can't sing), but nothing here really sets me on fire.

Rema-Rema - Rema-Rema EP - 1980 - A pretty cool four songs from this noisy synth band, and as an added bonus, they are on 4AD.  No body has heard of them, but they have been influential, since both Big Black and This Mortal Coil have covered them.

R.E.M. - Soundcheck/Demos 1980 - This has soundchecks from 1983-5 with a bunch of covers like Gloria and 8 Miles High.  The other part of this has early demos, most never made it on an album like Narrator, Baby I, Just a Touch, and more.

R.E.M. - So Much Younger Then - 1981 - A very young R.E.M. This is a live album.  I don't think any of these songs every made it on an album.  It is pretty good.  This is before Michael Stipe stopped writing coherent, straight forward lyrics.  Most of this is kind of like a party band.

R.E.M. - Tyrones O.C. Athens Ga - 1981 - This has a lot of the stuff on the earlier bootlegs that never ended up on records.  At this point they are writing some of the songs that will eventually see the light of day like Pretty Persuasion, Gardening At Night, Rockville and Radio Free Europe.  This is a pretty good show.

R.E.M. - I.R.S. Demos 10/81 - 1981 - These were the demo tapes they put together to get onto I.R.S.  It is pretty much everything that ended up on Chronic Town plus their surf song White Tornado.  It is a little rougher than Chronic Town.

R.E.M. - Viceroy Park, N.C. 11/7/81 - 1981 - This is a pretty good live show from 1981.  Mainly material from Chronic Town and Murmur.

R.E.M. - Chronic Town EP - 1982 - The first real release from R.E.M. and it is a beauty.  You have plenty of jangly guitars and mysterious lyrics.  You have rocking songs, Wolves Lower and Stumble, and pretty songs, Gardening At Night.

R.E.M. - Chronic Town Out takes - 1982 - This is leftover tracks from their first ep and alternative versions of some of the songs.  A few of the songs ended up on Murmur.

R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe/There She Goes Again Single - 1983 - No it's not the Hibtone version.  Just the normal version off their first album and one of their many Velvet Underground covers.

R.E.M. - Murmur - 1983 - This is in my top 10 favorite albums of all time.  This one changed the music underground.  A few years later, there were hundreds of R.E.M. clones.  Everything on here is great.

R.E.M. - (Don't Go Back To) Rockville/Catapult Single - 1984 - Seems like an unlikely single.  Good song none the less.  The b-side is a live version.

R.E.M. - Reckoning - 1984 - Not as good as their first album, but still pretty damn good.  Hard to say too much bad about an album with Pretty Persuasion on it.

R.E.M. - Reckoning Outtakes - 1984 - Most of this like Ages of You, Burn It Down and others ended up on Dead Letter Office.  Other stuff ended up on b-sides.

R.E.M - So. Central Rain (I'm Sorry)/King of the Road Single - 1984 - One of my favorite songs off their second album.  The b-side is a very drunken cover of the Roger Miller song.

R.E.M. - S. Central Rain/Voice of Harold/Pale Blue Eyes 12" Single - 1984 - One of the best songs of Reckoning, an amusing version of Seven Chinese Brothers redone with Michael Stipe singing the liner notes of a gospel album, and a nice Velvet Underground cover.  Not bad.

R.E.M. - Tighten Up Flexi Single - This is a fun little rarity.  It is a pretty fun cover of the old Archie Bell & the Drells soul classic.

R.E.M. - Femme Fatale Flexi Single - Another good cover of the Velvet Underground.  I have copy 335 out of 1000.

R.E.M. - We're Blinking Just As Fast As We Can - Live In Seattle - 1984 - A really good live album.  Two albums worth of all the classic songs from their first three albums, and some early versions of songs of Fables.  Good performances and good sound quality.

R.E.M. - Live Oddities From a Buck - In case you haven't realized it yet, I was a huge R.E.M. fan.  Besides Joy Division, they were it.  This is really cool because it has dozens of the cover songs they used to do, everything from God Save the Queen and 20th Century Boy to Does Your Mother Know and California Dreaming.   There is nothing better than a live show with lots of cool covers.  (The quality of the sound on this varies quite a bit.)

R.E.M. - Rainbow Music Hall Denver 7/3/84 - 1984 - This was the 2nd night (I saw the first night).  This was a pretty good show.  Lots of stuff off the forthcoming Fables.  (R.E.M. was cool because they would play lots of songs that they were still writing.)  They also did the Barney Miller Theme, So You Want To Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star and Gloria (with Peter Case sitting in).

R.E.M. - Fables of the Reconstruction - 1985 - I started to get disappointed with them on this album.  Some of this isn't very good.  Can't Get There From Here perks it up a little.  And, of course, Driver 8 is a classic.

- R.E.M. - CU Events Center Boulder 11/2/85 - 1985 - This show was a bit disappointing when I saw it.  The material from Fables just isn't as strong and they seemed to be going through the motions.  It is also where they moved from medium to large clubs to basketball arenas.  Even the covers Toys in the Attic and See No Evil didn't thrill me all that much.

R.E.M. - Can't Get There From Here(Extended Mix)/Bandwagon/Burning Hell 12" Single - 1985 - R.E.M. really understood the concept of a b-side.  These songs would have sucked on an album, but here they are kind of fun.  Bandwagon is a silly song and Burning Hell sounds like a joke metal song.

R.E.M. - Wendell Gee/Ages Of You/Crazy/Burning Down Double Single - 1985 - A quiet little song from Fables.  The other stuff is experimental stuff that never hit a normal album release (I believe this is all on compilations).  Crazy is a pretty cool cover of a Pylon song.

R.E.M. - Fall On Me/Rotary Ten/Toys in the Attic 12" Single - 1986 - A nice song from Pageant and an Aerosmith cover.  Amusing.

R.E.M. - Life's Rich Pageant - 1986 - Still not all that good.  However, it is saved a little for me by the cool cover of Superman (by the really obscure 60s band the Clique) and the amazing song Swan Swan H.

R.E.M. - Dead Letter Office - 1987 - A collection of b-sides and other rarities.  Most of this is pretty fun.

R.E.M. - Document - 1987 - They really lost me at this point.  Besides The One I Love, I didn't really like much else here.

R.E.M. - Eponymous - 1988 - A pretty decent compilation of their best songs back to the beginning of their career.  And, it finally reissues the very first version of Radio Free Europe (from the Hibtone single).

R.E.M. - Losing My Religion/Rotary Eleven Single - 1991 - Their big song that made them more famous than Bon Jovi.  Rotary Eleven is one of the series of Rotary instrumental songs that pops up as b-sides occasionally.

R.E.M. - Automatic For The People - 1992 - Wow, I think that I like R.E.M. again.  After a long spell of not very good albums, comes a quiet acoustic-sounding album that has a bunch of really good songs.  I really like Drive, Man on the Moon, and Everybody Hurts.

R.E.M. - Monster - 1994 - This one is pretty good too.  They have turned up the volume again and come up with a pretty good set of rock songs.  I enjoy Star 69, What's the Frequency, Kenneth, and Bang and Blame.

REO Speedwagon - You Can Tune a Piano, but You Can't Tuna Fish- 1978 - The bar band makes it big.  Kind of bland stuff.

REO Speedwagon - Hi Infidelity - 1980 - I guess I bought this once.  A whole bunch of that 80s power ballad stuff, you know wimpy songs with loud distorted guitar buried so deep in the mix that you can still play it on muzak.

The Replacements - Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash - 1981 - Loud fast hardcore with some really great songs and clever lyrics.  "I hate music, It's got too many notes."

The Replacements - I'm in Trouble/If Only You Were Lonely Single - 1981 - A classic rocking song on the a-side and a hilarious crying in your beer love song on the b-side.

The Replacements - Stink EP - 1982 - Still as loud and fast.  Another set of great songs.

The Replacements - Hootenanny - 1983 - Starting their pattern of albums with a huge variety of styles, they gave us a bunch of really great songs.  From the rockers, Run It (about running red lights) and Color Me Impressed, to the bluesy Treatment Bound.  "Yesterday's trash, too bored to thrash."

The Replacements - Let It Be - 1984 - From that magical year, 1984.  This album is so great.  The style is all over the place, from a R.E.M. style rocker, I Will Dare, hardcore, We're Coming Out, a straight Kiss metal cover, Black Diamond, and pretty songs, Sixteen Blue.

The Replacements - 20th Century Boy/Hey Good Lookin' Single - 1984 - Two really fun covers, one of T.Rex and the other Hank Williams Sr.

The Replacements - The Shit Hits the Fans - 1985 - Quite an apt title.  A live tape, ripped out of some audience member's tape recorder.  A completely drunken show where they can barely even play their songs.  Lots of covers of Thin Lizzy, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and others.  Pretty funny.

The Replacements - Tim - 1985 - The major label debut.  Really good collection of songs, including rocker, Bastards of Young, and ballads, Here Comes a Regular and Swingin' Party.

The Replacements - Pleased to Meet Me - 1987 -  After kicking Bob Stinson, their wild guitar player, out of the band, reportedly for out of control drug and alcohol use, The Replacements start to leave their drunken wild past behind.  Paul Westerberg comes up with another huge variety of really good songs.  Alex Chilton, The Ledge, and Can't Hardly Wait really stand out.

Republica - Republica - 1997 - You got to love that 80s revival sound.  Girl group 80s new wave sound that rocks.  Drop Dead Gorgeous and Ready To Go are great songs.

The Residents - The Third Reich and Roll - 1976 - The Residents sound like no other band.  This album is a two side medley of 60s hits twisted and warped in their distinctive and bizarre style.

The Residents - Duck Stab!/Buster & Glen - 1978 - More scary and bizarre songs.  Constantinople and Hello Skinny stand out.  Sinister Exaggerator features the distinctive guitar style of Snakefinger.

The Residents - Eskimo - 1979 - This is a musical creation of Eskimo daily life.  Really amazing stuff.  Topics covered are The Walrus Hunt, Birth, A Spirit Steals a Child and The Festival of Death.  Quite literally chilling stuff.

The Residents - The Commercial Album - 1980 - A very frustrating album.  It consists of 40 one minute songs, sort of commercial jingles.  There is some good stuff here, but by the time it really gets going, the song is over and they are on to the next jingle.

Paul Revere and the Raiders - Greatest Hits - There are a few pretty cool things from the 60s group on here like Kicks and Just Like Me.

Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers - The Modern Lovers - 1976 - A album of legendary songs from punk/new wave.  You have Roadrunner, Pablo Picasso, and Modern World. I also have this on 8-track.

Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers - Rock 'n' Roll With the Modern Lovers - 1977 - Has gone acoustic with childlike songs like Ice Cream Man, Rockin Rockin' Leprechauns, etc.

Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers - Modern Lovers Live - 1978 - Johathan Richman is the Mr. Rogers of punk rock.  Here, he has gotten rid of electric guitars (something about electricity being bad) and become an acoustic folksinger.  The songs are very child-like. And you are treated to about 15 verses of Ice Cream Man.  "One more time."

Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers - Back in Your Life - 1978 - Not his best album, but fairly enjoyable.

Jonathan Richman - Jonathan Sings - 1983 - Jonathan Richman is kind of like the Mr. Rogers of punk.  After the Modern Lovers, he put out a bunch of quiet, mostly acoustic albums.  This one is wonderful.  Really nice stuff like That Summer Feeling, Give Paris One More Chance, and Not There Yet.

Jonathan Richman - Rockin' and Romance - 1985 - This one really emphasizes the childlike wonder he puts into him music.  Great and funny songs like My Jeans (apparently, Levis don't fit him right and he swears by Lees), Chewing Gum Wrapper, and I'm Just Beginning to Live.

Jonathan Richman - It's Time For Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers - 1986 - Still pretty cute silly songs like Double Chocolate Malted and This Love of Mine.  I saw him live about this time and it was a lot of fun to see.

Stan Ridgeway - The Big Heat - 1986 - Stan Ridgeway's (the singer from Wall of Voodoo - you know, Mexican Radio) play like weird soundtracks to cheezy movies.  Drive She Said and The Big Heat are both pretty cool strange stories.

The Rip Chords - Hey Little Cobra/The Queen Single - 1964 - Not the Beach Boys, but an amazing simulation.  From the 60s.

Johnny Rivers - Greatest Hits - 1985 - I got this one for Secret Agent Man alone.  Some of the rest of this is ok too like The Midnight Special and In the Midnight Hour.

Rockpile - Seconds of Pleasure - 1980 - Kind of a new wave super group featuring Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe.  Pretty fun 60s kind of R&B.  Teacher Teacher was a bit of a hit.

Richard Rogers - Victory At Sea Volume 1 - 1959
Richard Rogers - Victory At Sea Volume 2 - 1959 - This is the soundtrack to the 50s 13 hour show about naval warfare in WWII that gets played on PBS all the time now.  Pretty nice symphonic type stuff.

The Rolling Stones - England's Newest Hitmakers - 1964 - Their first LP.  Pretty cool, from when they were still Blues.  Stuff like Not Fade Away, Carol, etc.

The Rolling Stones - The Last Time/Play With Fire Single - 1965 - Two good Stones songs.

The Rolling Stones - December's Children - 1965 - Not as good.  It does have Get Off My Cloud, but the rest isn't up to the other ones.

The Rolling Stones - Around and Around - 1966 - Back when they were just pups.  A great collection of their really early stuff when they were still R&B.  Covers of Poison Ivy, two Chuck Berry songs and like every band in the 60s, they had to write a song called Good Times, Bad Times.

The Rolling Stones - Aftermath - 1966 - Lots of great hits like Mother's Little Helper, Under My Thumb, and Paint It Black.  My favorite is Lady Jane.

The Rolling Stones - Between the Buttons - 1967 - Some pretty cool stuff from them right before they got into the heavy psychedelic stuff.  Big hits here, Ruby Tuesday and Let's Spend the Night Together, and other cool stuff like Connection and Complicated.

The Rolling Stones - Their Satanic Majesties Request - 1967 - Supposed to be their Sgt Peppers, but besides a few good songs, it isn't fantastic.  There are a few good things like She's A Rainbow, and 2000 Light Years From Home.

The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet - 1968 - Really great album.  You have Sympathy for the Devil, Salt of the Earth, and Street Fighting Man.  Those Stones could really rock back then.

The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed - 1969 - Pretty much the end of the 60s like stuff.  We head heavily into the 70s with Gimme Shelter, Midnight Rambler, and You Can't Always Get What You Want.

The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks 1964-1971 - 1972 - Classic album with a huge assortment of their really great songs from the 60s.  I have always wanted to go see the ruined castle they hang off on the cover photo.

The Rolling Stones - Exile On Main Street - 1972 - Pretty cool stuff.  A few hits like Tumbling Dice, Happy, etc. Some consider this their best album.

The Rolling Stones - Made in the Shade - 1975 - An ok album over all with some really great songs, Brown Sugar, Wild Horses, Angie, Bitch and more.

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls - 1978 - This was a really big album for them with the big hits Miss You, Shattered, and Beast of Burden.  Fairly nice stuff from them.

The Rolling Stones - Tattoo You - 1981 - Seems like a paint by numbers Stones album.  Undoubtedly you have heard Start Me Up and Waiting on a Friend.  Channel 12 (the other PBS station in town) used to have a show called FMTV (before MTV sued and made them change it to Teletunes) and Start Me Up seemed to be one of the probably three videos they owned.

The Rolling Stones - Singles Collection - The London Years - 1989 - 3 cds of all their classic songs.  Nice to have them all in one place.

Sonny Rollins - On Impulse! - Trying to cure my ignorance of jazz, I tried it.  I liked it pretty well.  I will have to look for more.

Roman Holiday - Cookin' On the Roof - 1983 - This is totally silly dancing sailors new wave stuff.  Kind of fun in the 80s, but really embarrassing now.  I think Stand By was the big song off this album.

Romantics - Strictly Personal - 1981 - This is a pretty crappy album.  They never could follow What I Like About You.  They have tried to become an arena rock band here and the results are really bad.  It says it was produced by Mike Stone.  I assume this is a different person than the karate instructor who stole Prisilla away from Elvis who he was going to hire a hit man to kill.

Room 291 - Room 291 - 1986 - This is a short four song cassette from a  Boulder band.  It is mostly non distinctive industrial type music.

Rotondi - Polka Changed My Life Today Single - Polka-punk was supposed to take over the world in the 80s.  Didn't seem to happen, I can't understand why.  This is really cool.

Roxy Music - Flesh + Blood - 1980 - A ok album from Brian Ferry's early band.  This one is pretty late in their career.  There is some ok stuff here.  I used to own Siren, which was a lot better album from them, but I think it was borrowed and never given back in college.
