RICHARD STANDLEY and ELIZABETH STULTS STANDLEY

Compiled by George Burton Stanley, November 8th, 1931

Richard Standley was born February 14th, 1777, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, the son of Alexander Scoby Standley and Sarah Handley.

Elizabeth Stults was born March 25th, 1782, in Middlesex County, New Jersey, the daughter of Jacob Stults and Margaret Outcalt. Text Box: Elizabeth Stultz Stanley

This couple were married in Middlesex County, New Jersey, January 25th, 1799.  They resided at New Brunswick, in Middlesex County, until the year 1818, and their first eight children were born there.  They then removed with their family to Suffield, Portage County, Ohio, where their last two children were born.

In Ohio, Richard and his family cleared a small farm, upon which they raised the products for the necessities of the family.  Aside from this, Richard was an expert at raising a very fine quality of flax, out of which his wife made all kinds of linens, as well as knit beautiful lace caps and collars for ladies.

The land owned by Richard was covered with timber.  He sold loads of wood in the different surrounding towns, which wood was used for fuel.

Because there was no coal in this vicinity at that time, something hotter than wood was needed for blacksmithing, so he built pits and burned wood into charcoal, which product was in great demand.

The parents and most of their children were baptized by Alexander Scoby Standley in the year 1838.  They all left for Missouri in September of the same year, arriving in Far West in October, where they found the Saints were being driven from their homes.  Richard and his wife and most of their children went to Buffalo, Rock Island County, Illinois, where the family made its home until the death of Richard on August 6th, 1843.  His wife, Elizabeth, then went to Nauvoo, where she made her home most of the time with her son Alexander.  She died in Potawatomie County, Iowa, February 26th, 1851.

Elizabeth Stults Standley had the privilege of receiving her endowments in the Nauvoo Temple, on January 30th, 1846.

Richard Stanley -------------------- Patriarchal Blessing

The following Patriarchal Blessing was taken from Book 12, page 567, in the office of the Church Historian, 47 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah:

No. 1675.  April 8th 1838.  A Blessing by Joseph Smith Patriarch upon the head of Richard Stanley son of Alexander S. born Feb. 14th 1777, Middlesex Co., New Jersey.  My aged Br. With reverence and respect to thy age in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ; I lay my hands upon thy head and bless thee with the blessing of a father and seal upon thy head such blessings as thy heavenly Father hath in store for thee and that thou mayest bless thy posterity, for thou shalt stand as a patriarch at the head of thy family, and I seal this on thy head even to be a patriarch in thy family to bless thy children from generation to generation like Israel of old, for thou art of Israel and shall be blest with Israel and when thy heart is prepared, the Lord will send his angels to minister unto thee to make known thy duty and unfold the things of God, to thy understanding.  Thou hast become a child in thine old age through obedience to the fullness of the gospel even a child of God, and inasmuch as thou art faithful, the blessings of heaven temporal and spiritual shall rest on thy head.  Thou shalt become strong in spirit and in faith, for the spirit of the living God shall rest down upon thee and thy body and mind shall be quickened, and thy understanding enlarged.  Thy desires are to understand and do the will of thy heavenly Father.  Thou hast abilities, and should have been ordained to some office in the church even the office of a deacon, that thou mightest improve thy talent and fill thy station.  Be faithful and thou shalt attain to the priesthood.  Thy posterity shall be numerous and become righteous.  In thy old age, thy children shall rise up and call thee blest, and thou shalt have much joy with them, for thou shalt yet live many years, notwithstanding thou art now advanced in age, and thou shalt receive an inheritance in Zion.  Thou shalt see the great gathering of the saints, yea thou shalt see them come from the East and West, from the North and South.  Thou shalt behold the glory of God appear and the power of heaven in Zion and the saints crowned with celestial glory and be numbered with them.  Yea great and many are thy blessings if thou art faithful.  Tongue cannot express them, neither can they be written and I seal thee up to eternal life in the name of Jesus Christ, and by the authority of my office according to the will of my heavenly Father even so.  Amen.
