Thoughts on being a considerate Nyx user First keep the following in mind: 1. Nyx has finite resources -- too little for everyone to treat Nyx like their own personal machine, and do anything and everything. 2. Nyx serves a lot of users. 3. Nyx is free. Treat it like a gift. 4. Nyx is run by a non-profit organization to benefit the general public. A general guidelines we use with respect to #1 and #2, is: If we let one user do it, what is the impact if ALL users do it, simultanenously? Thus things that are unwise would be: - Running cpu intensive programs (e.g., various games like muds) - Running disk intensive programs (e.g. "find / ...") - Running memory intensive programs - Running lots of jobs - Running multiple sessions (e.g., "screen", multiple logins) - Running jobs when you're not logged in (such as programs that read "fifo" (named pipe) files). - Staying connected for long periods of time - Storing huge amounts of files - Using Nyx for services you could get elsewhere (e.g., X window clients) - Setting up services that others will use (e.g., bypassing the lack of anonymous ftp by having people log into your account) With regard to #3 & #4: - Don't demand special favors or service. - Don't expect others to compensate for your mistake (e.g. forgetting your password). - Don't try to run a business from Nyx. - Don't sell the services you are provided for free, such as webspace. If you're unsure, ask. Some things we'll say "no" to in advance are: - Can I run bots from your system? - Can you give me a newsfeed? - Can I use NNTP to read news here (other than nyx.* groups) - Can I get a SLIP/PPP connection? - Can I install yet-another-Mud/Muck/Muse/Moo/Mush/M*? - Can I install a game that is constantly running (empire, mud)? - Can I make my .plan/.signature a "fifo" file?
